Common Faults and Repair Solutions of CNC Machine Tool Spindle Components

Spindle assemblies are the core parts that perform cutting operations on CNC machine tools. Subjected to cutting forces during long-term high-speed rotation, they are prone to various failures, which degrade machining accuracy and production efficiency. Mastering the diagnosis and repair of common faults can effectively reduce downtime and cut maintenance expenses.
Common Faults and Root Causes
1. Spindle Accuracy Degradation
Wear from long-term operation is the primary cause. During high-speed rotation, the balls and raceways of spindle bearings gradually wear, resulting in increased bearing clearance. Meanwhile, continuous high-speed operation causes heat buildup inside the spindle, leading to thermal elongation. The consequences include dimensional deviations and poor surface finish of machined workpieces. Irregular sharp noise will also occur during operation, and the sound varies with spindle speed.
2. Spindle Fails to Rotate or Runs at Abnormal Speed
This fault originates from both electrical and mechanical problems.
Electrical reasons include motor failure, inverter breakdown or loose wiring, which cuts off power supply to the spindle.
Mechanical failures are mostly caused by broken belts or loose couplings. Poly V-belts will crack and age after long service. Without regular inspection and replacement, power transmission will be interrupted. The spindle speed may fluctuate erratically, seriously ruining the surface quality of machined parts.
Troubleshooting and Repair Solutions
For reduced spindle accuracy:
First, measure radial runout and axial play with a dial indicator to check the clearance. If the clearance is within the adjustable range, tighten the bearing preload nut to reduce clearance and restore precision. If the bearings are severely worn, replace them with new ones. After replacement, recheck spindle runout and set proper preload to prevent excessive temperature rise caused by over-tightening.
Keep the spindle well lubricated. Fill grease regularly as required to dissipate heat and minimize bearing wear.
If the spindle refuses to turn:
Use a multimeter to test the input voltage of the motor to rule out power and wiring faults. Replace the defective inverter or motor if electrical components are damaged.
If the power supply is normal, inspect the mechanical drive structure. Open the spindle box and check the V-belt. Replace damaged belts of the same model and adjust tension properly. For loose couplings, retighten the connecting bolts. Resume production only after the spindle runs smoothly in testing.
Preventive Maintenance Measures
During daily upkeep, regularly check the spindle for abnormal noise and overheating. Clean chips and oil contamination inside the spindle taper hole after daily work. Keep the taper surface clean when clamping cutters to avoid scratches and poor clamping precision.
Clean the lubrication system and renew grease every six months. These steps will greatly extend spindle service life and reduce breakdowns
